Meadowbrook Substation

Project Overview

Bunney’s Inc. was contracted by Ferreira UTEC to support APS Transmission & Distribution (T&D) operations at the Meadowbrook Substation.  This work represents Phase 1 of a multi-stage infrastructure upgrade designed to improve service reliability and system performance within the local power grid.

Scope of Work

Bunney’s scope focused on excavation, trenching, and vault installation inside and outside the energized substation, requiring precise coordination with APS safety and access protocols.

  • Excavation and trenching for new underground utility and conduit runs.
  • Installation of two-piece concrete utility vaults, each weighing approximately 70,000 pounds.
  • Coordination of barricade placement and traffic control for work occurring on adjacent roadways.
  • Operation of vacuum excavation trucks for safe and precise digging near existing utilities.
  • Continuous collaboration with APS and Ferreira UTEC field teams to maintain safety, schedule, and quality standards.

Challenges & Solutions

Performing excavation and vault installation inside an active APS substation required strict adherence to T&D safety procedures, real-time coordination with APS personnel, and specialized equipment operation to avoid disruption to live systems.

Additionally, offsite trenching and vault connections demanded careful traffic management and public safety controls along the bordering roadways.

Results

Bunney’s Inc. is currently working on Phase 1, which includes trenching, excavation, and vault placement tasks for Meadowbrook.  This will set the stage for future electrical infrastructure improvements. The project highlights Bunney’s expertise in complex utility excavation, substation construction support, and safe field coordination under live conditions.
