Joint trench design & installation for safe, efficient utility corridors
Bunney’s Inc. plans, builds, and restores utility trenches that keep power, communications, water, gas, and sewer lines protected and serviceable. Our field crews work across Arizona’s industrial, commercial, and municipal sites—managing traffic control, shoring, dust suppression, and strict safety practices to deliver code-compliant results with minimal disruption.

What we do
-
Pre-construction & design assist: route studies, load/conflict analysis, and joint trench layouts.
-
Utility locating & potholing/daylighting: verify depths and clearances before we dig.
-
Excavation & trench safety: OSHA-compliant shoring, shielding, or benching; trench plates for access.
-
Bedding, placement & spacing: proper bedding/shading, spacers, and separation per plans/spec.
-
Conduit & pipe installation: power/telecom ducts, water/gas/sewer lines, tracer wire, warning tape.
-
Backfill & compaction: select fill, moisture conditioning, and density testing to project requirements.
-
Surface restoration: paving, curb & gutter, sidewalks, and striping returned to pre-work condition.
-
Closeout: as-builts, test reports, and turnover documentation.
Arizona-specific considerations
Monsoon storms, caliche soils, and high temperatures demand local know-how. We size dewatering where needed, coordinate dust control with local regulations, and time pours/compaction to meet spec in extreme heat.
When a joint trench makes sense
A shared corridor can reduce project cost and future disturbance when utilities have compatible separation, access, and thermal/performance requirements. We’ll advise when separate trenches or duct bank construction are the better fit.

FAQs
What utilities can share a joint trench?
Common pairings include power and telecom (with required separation), or multiple low-voltage communications. Pressure pipe (water/gas) typically requires separate spacing and protection—your plans and local code govern the final layout.
Do you handle permitting and traffic control?
Yes. We coordinate right-of-way permits, traffic control plans, and agency inspections, and provide daily job-site documentation.
How do you prevent strikes on existing lines?
Utility locates, targeted potholing, and—where needed—hydro/vacuum excavation around conflict points. Digging proceeds under a competent person with real-time depth verification.
What backfill and compaction specs can you meet?
We place approved materials and achieve the project’s density/moisture criteria (e.g., percent of maximum density per test method), with third-party testing and reports for closeout.
Can you restore asphalt and concrete after the trench is closed?
Absolutely. We handle temporary patching and final restoration—paving, curb & gutter, sidewalks, and striping—to agency standards.
